200,000 were affected Trump wants to check the status of all Biden era refugees
America recently reduced its annual quota for accepting refugees to 7,500 people. Now people who have entered the country must also be screened again. Hundreds of thousands of people will be affected.
The US administration under President Donald Trump wants the status of hundreds of thousands of refugees in the US to be checked. This concerns everyone who came to the country during the term of his predecessor, President Joe Biden, the AP and Reuters news agencies reported, citing internal Trump administration memos.
The brief states that under the Biden administration, “utility” and “quantity” take priority over “detailed studies” and this requires a comprehensive review and “re-interviewing of all refugees admitted between January 20, 2021 and February 20, 2025.”
This will impact the estimated 200,000 refugees who entered the country during Democrat Biden’s four years in office. Last year, America accepted nearly 100,000 refugees. The main countries of origin are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela and Syria.
The internal document was signed by US Immigration Services Director Joe Edlow. Authorities have not yet commented on the project.
NGO representatives rejected accusations that refugees were entering the country without control. “Refugees entering the US through the refugee admissions program are subject to the most stringent screening and screening of all migrants,” the president of Refugees International told CNN. “They undergo intensive refugee status reviews, background checks, and security clearances. The Trump administration knows this very well.”
Trump had promised his voters tough action on migration during the election campaign. Since the start of his term, the administration and the immigration agency ICE have carried out massive raids on migrants across the country. In late October, the US also drastically lowered its annual refugee limit. Instead of 125,000 people, only a maximum of 7,500 refugees will be accepted per year in the future. According to government orders, priority should be given to the admission of white South Africans.
