Two of the five women entered Saxony letting their invitation for a mammography screening expire without being used. Last year, a total of 163,284 women in the Free State took part in screening, as announced by the Association of Compulsory Health Insurance Doctors of Saxony upon request.
Saxony is in the top 5 in Germany
This equates to a participation rate of 57.4 percent. After experiencing a decline in recent years, the pre-Corona level in 2019 was again reached. When compared nationally, Saxony is one of the top 5 with the highest participation rate.
Cases of non-invitation also include women who suffer from breast cancer or already undergo curative mammography every year due to family history, explained Katharina Bachmann-Bux, spokesperson for KV Sachsen. We can only speculate about other reasons for not participating, such as lack of information and explanation.
Who is invited and why?
All women aged between 50 and 75 years are invited for mammography screening every two years. The letter is accompanied by a complete and verified brochure containing information. According to KV Sachsen, an important component in the educational process is the attending obstetrician.
During the examination, your breasts will be X-rayed to detect any changes as early as possible. This is intended to reduce the death rate due to breast cancer. In addition, affected women should be provided with as gentle treatment as possible. Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women. According to the latest data from the Center for Cancer Registry Data at the Robert Koch Institute, there will be 74,500 new cases in women nationally in 2022.
