A serious infection, which occurred in hospital after heart surgery, led to the death of a 53-year-old man, who lived in Cisterna di Latina. This is the belief of the family who filed a complaint against the European Hospital in Rome. His wife and two children believe that it is a case of medical malpractice and, assisted by lawyer Renato Mattatelli, await the first trial scheduled for March 18, 2026 at the Rome Court as reported by local media.

According to his lawyers, the patient was not given adequate information about the true risks of the surgery, including the possibility of death, or about any therapeutic alternatives. Had he received the correct medical communication, the lawyer believes as reported by LazioTv, the man would never have agreed to the operation.

The reconstruction of the facts took place in 2022. The man, who had suffered from heart disease since birth, had undergone surgery determined by doctors to be a routine procedure, recommended for improve quality of life but not considered important. Strengthened by the reassurance received and trust in the professionals, she accepted the operation. However, after three operations and an infection while in hospital, his condition deteriorated rapidly until he died.

The court will now decide whether there is liability on the part of the health facility. “When he entered the hospital, he enjoyed reasonable, or even good, health – explains Mattatelli’s lawyer –. It is reasonable to assume that the serious infection that killed him came from the hospital.” From analysis of medical records and autopsy results, the lawyer stated that evidence of surgical error emerged, bleeding due to broken stitches and infection contracted during hospitalization, elements that would cause the collapse of vital organs and the death of the patient within days. A trial will establish any liability.
