Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former British military officer, sharply criticized Donald Trump’s Ukraine policy. He accused the US President of promoting Putin’s interests.
Hamish de Bretton-Gordon served in the British Army for 23 years, including commanding a unit specializing in protection against chemical, biological and nuclear attacks. He also commanded a similar NATO unit. He currently works as a visiting lecturer in disaster management at Bournemouth University. In an article for the Telegraph he analyzed the current situation in the Ukraine war and criticized the role of US President Donald Trump.
Trump’s controversial peace plan
Trump presented a 28-point peace plan in Ukraine. However, this raises “worrying” questions, De Bretton-Gordon said. There are rumors that this plan was hatched in Moscow. A poor English translation of the document suggests it was originally written in Russian, he wrote.
The plan was formulated in such a way that it primarily served Vladimir Putin’s interests. Hamish de Bretton-Gordon assessed that Trump not only criticized Ukraine, but also Europe and NATO.
“Trump doesn’t understand Putin’s distorted way of thinking”
He criticized Trump for reducing conflict for economic interests, for example through trade in rare earth metals. Putin, on the other hand, is interested in an ideological victory: he wants to completely subjugate Ukraine and demonstrate his power, according to British experts. Trump will not acknowledge or even ignore Putin’s long-term goals. According to De Bretton-Gordon, he “does not understand Putin’s distorted way of thinking.”
Dispute regarding Donbass
De Bretton-Gordon also reported on conversations with people in Kyiv. They desperately sought a peace agreement, but to no avail. Donbass in particular is non-negotiable for them. But Putin stressed that the region must be part of any agreement.
Attracting European responsibility
The author calls on European leaders to act decisively. America could become an unreliable partner under Trump, De Bretton-Gordon warned. Europe must now show strength and confront Putin.
