Munich – A heart-warming lunch: sitting among retirees who often live with small incomes and big worries Princess Sophie of Bavaria. He laughed, listened, asked questions – and provided well-received attention. Since this week, the 36-year-old has become an official ambassador for the “Lichtblick Senior Aid” association, which supports impoverished senior citizens in Germany.

“The welfare of elderly people is very important to me,” the future Wittelsbacher boss was quoted as saying in a statement from the association. “I was very close to my grandmother and involved in a nursing home. I learned firsthand how important community is in bringing happiness and health to this generation.”

On May 20, 2023, Ludwig (43), the eldest son of Bavarian Prince Luitpold, married his Sophie-Alexandra. Ludwig was the future head of the House of Wittelsbach. The fairytale wedding took place at Munich’s Theatinerkirche

Princess Sophie (née Sophie-Alexandra Evekink) married Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, great-grandson of the last Bavarian King Ludwig III, in 2023. Her son arrived in August 2024 Prince Rupprecht Theodor Maria to the world.

Together with her husband, this political scientist is involved worldwide with the Nymphenburg Aid Association. Now he is also helping in Germany, where poverty in old age is a harsh reality for many people.

“It means a lot that a daughter cares”

“Absolutely no one should be living in poverty,” he said daughter. “Especially not the older generation. These people have worked all their lives – now is the time for them to get support.”

To kick off their engagement, the couple invited a group of seniors to tour the Munich Residence and then have lunch at Pfälzer Weinstube. “The fact that a daughter is interested in us and laughing with us – that means a lot to me,” said 84-year-old retiree Lioba B., moved. “I will never forget this day!”

“Lichtblick Senior Aid” supports more than 31,000 retirees across Germany – financially and in an effort to combat loneliness. Founder, Lydia Staltner, is grateful for this royal support and looks forward to further joint projects.

A glimmer of hope – for all those who are often overlooked.
