He ended his career at Ivrea in 1965 after a period in Florence. He made 15 appearances for the Azzurri and wore the captain’s armband five times, sharing a training camp with Giampiero Boniperti and taking part in the ill-fated expedition to the ’62 World Cup, which also marked the end of his Azzurri career.
At the end of his career, he fled to the United States where – Buffon later said – he befriended Frank Sinatra. Giovanni Gronchi knighted him of labor for the match against England which left him with a broken nose and several ribs. He consoled himself from his vicissitudes not only with championships, but with a little painting and reading Tolstoy.
A year ago, Lorenzo spoke about his healthy lifestyle and love of gymnastics even though he is over 90 years old. On television he still watches the AC Milan match, which on Sunday gave him the final prize, winning the derby against Inter.
