RTL/ntv trend barometerSatisfaction with Merz is at a new all-time low

When it came to Sunday’s questions, almost nothing happened for the parties, but there was a clear change in one question: Germans’ satisfaction with Chancellor Merz fell by two percentage points.

After Germans’ satisfaction with Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s work remained at the same level for several weeks, it has now fallen two points to a new low: Only 23 percent are satisfied with Merz’s work so far.

On the other hand, 75 percent disagree with his work, as shown by the new trend barometer from RTL and ntv. Only CDU supporters were satisfied. Supporters of the opposition parties, but also the SPD and even the CSU, were dissatisfied with the Chancellor’s work.

On the question of party preferences, the lack of support for Merz is reflected in the poor performance of the CDU/CSU; However, the value of Uni has not fallen. The values of other Bundestag parties have not changed either. Only BSW experienced a slight improvement: the party reached 3 percent, which was reported again by the survey institute Forsa this week. As happened last week, the AfD is one point ahead of the European Union.

In particular, the parties can expect the following results if the Bundestag is elected this week: AfD 26 percent (federal election on February 23: 20.8), CDU/CSU 25 percent (28.5 percent), SPD 14 percent (16.4), Green Party 12 percent (11.6), Left 11 percent (8.8), BSW 3 percent (4,981), FDP 3 percent (4.3).

The proportion of those who did not vote and were undecided was 26 percent, much higher than the proportion of those who did not vote at the last federal election (17.9 percent).

With a majority of 54 percent, Germans do not trust any party with political competence. When asked which party was best at dealing with Germany’s problems, 17 percent chose the Unity Party, an increase of one point. The SPD was given 5 percent political competence, a decrease of one point compared to the previous week. The Green Party still has 5 percent of the vote on this issue. The AfD is said to be at 13 percent, down one point compared to last Tuesday. The Left rose one point to 4 percent.

The most important topic of the moment is the war in Ukraine, mentioned by 33 percent of respondents, and the trend continues to increase: The survey was conducted between Tuesday last week and Monday last – during which time the figure reached 33 percent. On Friday and Monday, 48 percent named the war as the most important issue. The backdrop was a discussion of “Trump’s plan.”

This is followed by the performance of the federal government (29 percent) and the general economic situation (23 percent), as well as discussions regarding the future of the pension system (22 percent). Other topics: US politics/situation in the US (15 percent), environment, climate or climate conference (12 percent), Middle East (8 percent), Bundeswehr (7 percent) and immigration (6 percent).

Data for the RTL/ntv trend barometer were collected by market research and opinion agency Forsa on behalf of RTL Deutschland between 18 and 24 November 2025. Database: 2501 respondents. Statistical margin of error: plus/minus 2.5 percentage points.
