Bruna Pinasco, wife of satirical designer and cartoonist Sergio Staino, died today, Tuesday 25 November. ‘Auntie’, as her husband called her in his famous cartoon, died at the age of 74 from an incurable disease. The announcement of the disappearance was made by the Municipality of Scandicci, a town on the outskirts of Florence where the couple lived with their family.
Bruna’s death comes more than two years after the death of Staino, who died at the age of 83 on 21 October 2023. The ‘aunt’ in the cartoon is the wife of Bobo, Staino’s alter ego, and represents a feminine point of view and complements that of her husband, who believed strongly in the Italian left, but without abandoning his harsh self-criticism.
condolences to Scandicci
“I would like to express my sadness and that of the entire Scandicci community at the loss of a special woman – wrote the mayor Claudia Sereni in a message – Bruna Pinasco, with her always discreet but fundamental presence, knew how to be at the center of the relationship together with Sergio. She had an extraordinary ability to keep everything and people together, from Sergio’s activities to the extraordinary network of friendships that in the history of this extraordinary couple were able to make a difference. ‘Bibi’ occupies a unique and important place in the cartoons of Sergio, who never hid his great love for this extraordinary woman, who also brought in another culture – Peruvian culture – which enriched the way he knew how to live and keep the family together.”
“His passing – continued the first citizen – leaves behind deep sorrow and an ever greater responsibility in preserving the memory of two inseparable figures. Only two years after Sergio’s passing, today we also say goodbye to him. The great couple ‘Scandiccesi’ has left us”.
A funeral chapel will be set up on the premises of the Castello dell’Acciaiolo di Scandicci tomorrow, Wednesday 26 November, from 1pm to 8pm.
