The case of a woman who abused Yazidi women as slaves will return to the Koblenz Regional High Court (OLG) in mid-December. On December 15, the fourth criminal division will decide on the issue of punishment, the OLG announced. This is important because, following the decision in June 2023, the Federal Court saw, among other things, legal error in the conviction of the women for aiding and abetting genocide.
Judges in Koblenz found evidence that a German convict had abused a young Yazidi woman as a house slave for three years during her time with the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist militia in Syria and Iraq. Her husband brought the Yazidi woman into the house and frequently raped her. The defendant enabled and encouraged the rape.
The woman was found guilty, among other things, of membership in a foreign terrorist organization, crimes against humanity, and aiding and abetting genocide. He was sentenced to a total of nine years and three months in prison. He appealed this.
The Federal Court, Germany’s highest criminal court, reversed part of the guilty verdict in July this year and ordered the Koblenz Regional Court of Appeal to renegotiate the sentence.
