With around nine million visitors per year, the Louvre is the most visited museum in the world. After the theft, the museum management came under fire for a lack of security measures. It took the thieves less than eight minutes to break into the Apollo Gallery through a window in broad daylight using a goods lift.

An unexpected tool was used during the robbery

Museum director Laurence des Cars has now announced the creation of a mobile police station at the Louvre. In addition, 100 new surveillance cameras will be installed at the museum by the end of the year.

Four people, including one wearing white protective clothing, stood on the balcony of the building after the Louvre was broken into.

According to Des Cars, the robbers had opened a display case containing an electric cutter designed for cutting concrete. “When the display cases at the Apollo Gallery were replaced in 2019, this method was not even considered,” he said. At that time, glass cabinets were primarily designed to withstand weapon attacks.

The stolen jewels have still not been found. Among them is a diamond and emerald necklace that former Emperor Napoleon I gave to Empress Marie-Louise. Jewels associated with 19th century queens Marie-Amélie and Hortense and Empress Eugénie were also stolen.
