Brazil’s Supreme Court has ruled that former President Jair Bolsonaro can no longer appeal his 27 years and 3 months prison sentence for the attempted coup and must begin serving his sentence. Bolsonaro has been in preventive detention since August, first under house arrest and in prison since Saturday: he was taken there because he attempted to damage an electronic monitoring bracelet with a soldering iron, and is considered a flight risk.

Therefore, Bolsonaro will remain in the single cell where he is currently located, at the federal police headquarters in the capital Brasilia. His lawyers will be able to request his release from house arrest, also in light of his serious health problems, which resulted in part from an assassination attempt on him during the 2018 election campaign.
