Berlin – Nearly one million foreigners live in Germany – even though their asylum applications were rejected! The reason is simple: Thousands of deportations fail each year (usually only on the day of planned departure) because they are not turned over to federal police.

Specific figures from the Federal Police for last year: 56,322 deportations planned by 2024 – but more than 60 percent of them failed. Only 22,234 people can actually be deported or repatriated.

► States regulate most returns (19,487); the federal police only took over directly in 2747.

► Specially trained air guards (PBL) of the Federal Police are urgently needed: 2,351 of these officers are on duty by the end of 2024 – they accompanied deportations 13,807 times.

► Stunning: Although the number of deportations increased significantly – by 22.2 percent compared to 2023, the number of deportations decreased sharply (2023: 4776, 2024: 2150). However, the number of refusals at the border soared: 45,337 cases (2023: 35,618).

Reasons according to the Federal Police: Border controls at internal land borders are starting to take effect. But it also means more work (and more pressure) for emergency services. However: The total number of returns increased slightly by 4.8 percent in 2024 under the leadership of Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (55) compared to 2023.

The head of the federal police union is Heiko Teggatz (53). He told BILD: “Foreigners who are legally obliged to leave the country should be detained early on. Then they cannot just run away the morning after deportation.”
