This is a very symbolic district in Paris, which has become a political subject. Four months before the municipal elections, the candidates set out to attack Butte Montmartre (18th arrondissement). This is especially true of select environmental activists who are now warning against the “Disneylandization” of a site visited by some 10 million tourists each year.
“Montmartre is a symptom of the overtourism that threatens Paris,” warned Anne-Claire Boux and Émile Meunier, elected environmental activists of the 18th century, who presented their “surprise” action plan on Tuesday, November 25, to “reduce and regulate the flow of tourists in order to preserve environmental life in Montmartre.”
