A general debate on the budget is taking place in the Bundestag today. This is the culmination of budget discussions and is usually a showdown between the government and the opposition.

On Wednesday, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) will present the 2026 budget in the Bundestag. Since Parliament has the right to budget, it also decides federal spending.

What’s in the 2026 budget?

In addition to spending on individual ministries – see graph – the black-red coalition also plans spending to encourage economic growth. The price: eight billion to 98 billion euros in additional new debt.

How is the general debate going?

Usually, the Chancellor defends the policies of his government coalition in general debates. Parliamentary group leaders from all parties then vote. The opposition usually uses this opportunity to convey clear criticism.
