Three years after presentation GPT Chat The application of artificial intelligence has become present in the daily lives of people in Germany. In a representative Forsa survey conducted by the Tüv Association of 1,005 respondents, two out of three respondents (65 percent) identified themselves as AI users. A year ago the number was just over half (53 percent). By October 2023, only 37 percent said they use AI.
Almost every second respondent (45 percent) uses AI several times a week, even 12 percent every day. The scores are even higher among the younger generation aged between 16 and 29 years. Here, 55 percent use generative AI every day or several times a week. Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content on its own – such as text, images, music, videos or program code.
Top dog ChatGPT is facing competition
Among AI tools, ChatGPT continues to dominate the market. 85 percent of those surveyed said they had used OpenAI chatbots. However, competition is getting tougher. Google Gemini is now used by one in three respondents (33 percent), Microsoft Copilot by one in four respondents (26 percent). Fourth place is Cologne-based startup DeepL, which initially specialized in translation software but now also offers AI language models. In fifth place is located Meta AI from the Facebook group Meta. Apps like Perplexity, DeepSeek, Claude AI, Grok from Elon Musk’s xAI and others only play a minor role.
AI helps research
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used by German society to search for information. 72 percent now say they use AI for research. A year ago the value was only 48 percent. The use of AI to create and improve text is slightly reversible. 43 percent got help here. A year ago the value was 50 percent. 38 percent use AI tools to generate ideas. 34 percent use AI as a translator. Joachim Bühler, Managing Director of the Tüv Association, said that AI is a tool to perform a wide variety of tasks for many people anywhere and at any time. But safety culture has not kept pace with these developments. “Many people struggle to recognize the difference between real content and AI content and underestimate the risks of deepfakes and data leaks. We must ensure that widespread use of AI also includes safe and enlightened use of AI.”
