“From this Forum the concept we are living will emerge strongly. There are many actors who want to keep going, having a very clear objective: to guarantee that the inspiring principles of our national health system remain protected, through the necessary changes, because the current conditions are different from those when the NHS was born. Fabrizio d’Alba, general director of the Policlinico Umberto I in Rome and president of the Federsanità national, said this at the 20th edition of the Risk Management Forum in Arezzo.
“We will tend towards a different balance point than today, because the “current situation” cannot be defined that way – d’Alba underlined – Public-private collaboration is a necessity, but we must understand where to base it”. There must be “different principles and rules. Regarding the issue of autonomy – he added – we must ask ourselves whether the structure of health service provision still needs to be worked on, because so far this structure has shown that it sometimes does not support efforts for equity. This can also be done with new rules, without destroying the legislative and regulatory system, but – he concluded – there is a need for intervention”.
