A definite life sentence for Marco Bianchi and a new appeal trial, the third, for his brother Gabriele. This is what the judges of the fifth criminal section of the Supreme Court decided in the trial regarding the murder of Willy Monteiro Duarte, who was killed in a brutal beating on the night between 5 and 6 September 2020 in the center of Colleferro, in the province of Rome. To Artena’s eldest brother, Stoats asked, as requested by the Attorney General’s Office, to discuss the general mitigating circumstances admitted in the second appeal which resulted in a sentence of 28 years in prison. Therefore, Bianchi risks being sentenced to life imprisonment again as imposed in the first instance.
Both defendants have been found criminally responsible for their actions on that tragic night. In its first verdict, the Supreme Court has set definitive sentences for the other two defendants: 23 years for Francesco Belleggia and 21 years for Mario Pincarelli, who immediately joined his brothers and hit Willy with kicks to the head and blows and punches while the boy was now helpless on the ground. The brutal attack lasted fifty seconds and in the action the two brothers, according to the prosecutor, “had a greater role with Gabriele, an MMA martial arts expert, who started with a powerful kick to Monteiro’s chest which was immediately followed by Marco”.
The beating took place outside a pub. The group of four, as described by one witness, got out of the car and launched themselves at anyone within reach. Anyone that night, in that square, could have ended up like Willy. Technical blows are given to injure, violence to cause very serious consequences. And they killed Willy. During the second appeal, the Bianchi brothers delivered a spontaneous statement essentially apologizing to the family members of the 21-year-old man from Cape Verde. “We are not monsters – they said in front of Willy’s mother – we are sad about this incident and we apologize to the family.” Gabriele reiterated that he “never visited Monteiro that night” and admitted that he and his brother had “made mistakes in life and we are ready to pay for them”. Meanwhile, Marco, via video link, declared himself “responsible for the onside kick given to Willy but not when he was on the pitch. I will pay my responsibility” but “we don’t deserve all this media hate”.
