Someone killed two National Guardsmen in a shootout near the White House in Washington. The two officers were initially taken to hospital in serious condition, but a short time later Governor Patrick Morrisey confirmed their deaths.
Police said they arrested a suspect and secured the area. At this time, the dynamics of the shooting are unknown, but Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, the US government agency that handles presidential security, said that the only known connection to the White House is where the shooting occurred.
President Donald Trump, who was in Florida for Thanksgiving, wrote on his Truth social network that the “animals” responsible for the shooting “will pay dearly.” He also said that he was also hit by gunfire and he was hospitalized in serious condition.
Flights were halted at Reagan National Airport for about half an hour shortly after the shooting. The White House was also temporarily closed, but later reopened to people with badges.
