The Official State Gazette (BOE) published on Friday the dismissal at its request of Carlos Mazón as president of the Generalitat Valenciana, after his resignation last Monday, but without including the usual “gratitude for the services provided”. The withdrawal of this formula was an explicit decision of the government, an unusual thing that only occurred in cases such as those of former Catalan presidents Carles Puigdemont or Artur Mas.
“I have come to declare the dismissal, at my request, of Mr. Carlos Mazón Guixot from the office of President of the Generalitat Valenciana”, reads Royal Decree 1025/2025, of November 5, signed by King Felipe VI and the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez. Sources in the Generalitat, however, assured on Tuesday that the dismissal will be published on the BOE only after the election of his replacement by the Cortes. Valencians, by virtue of the Valencian Government Law of 1983, as happened in the case of Francisco Camps in 2011. The royal dismissal decree published in the BOE refers “to the provisions of article 27 of the Statute of Autonomy of the Valencian Community”.
Mazón resigned on Monday, after the first anniversary of the Dana disaster, which left 229 dead in the province of Valencia. The resignation was triggered by the state funeral, celebrated in Valencia on 29 October, in memory of the victims of the previous year’s massacre, which cost the lives of 229 people in the province of Valencia. Many relatives of the victims greeted him with cries of “murderer”, a scoundrel and a coward” and fired him, demanding his resignation”.
Mazón will remain interim president until the election of his replacement in the Valencian Cortes, which will have to be negotiated between PP and Vox. The People’s Party has 40 deputies and the majority in parliament is 50, or 99 in total. Vox has 13 seats; the PSPV-PSOE, 31 and Compromís, 15.
Santiago Abascal’s party has confirmed that talks are about to begin. Once Mazón has formalized his resignation, the parliamentary groups will have 12 days to present a candidate for investiture. The deadline ends November 19th.
