Russia’s war against Ukraine was captured in photos and videos more intensely than any other war. A lot of content floods the internet every day. But military members who use social media also pose major risks. In Ukraine, this is said to have fatal consequences for soldiers and civilians.

Russia’s ballistic missile attack on a gathering of Ukrainian soldiers in Dnipropetrovsk earlier this month likely occurred through the use of social media, according to military chief Oleksandr Syrsky. As reported by the Unian news agency, citing Syrskyj’s statement on the TSN television station, the regulations were said to have not been complied with.

“There was another group chat on the social network, and this is a disregard for basic security norms. Russia probably learned about the meeting through hacking of the network,” Ukraine’s military chief said. He also pointed out that celebrations are prohibited in frontline areas.

This is not the first time that the Russian side has been able to carry out a similar attack. Syrsky expressed hope that “the disciplinary decisions taken will help reduce the risk of a similar situation recurring to zero.”

Soldiers and civilians died

According to Unian, two ballistic missiles and three combat drones were used in the attack on Dnipropetrovsk. There were deaths among military personnel and civilians. The soldiers were said to have gathered to receive the awards. According to the report, the officers in the 30th Marine Corps who were affected have been discharged. According to the Public Prosecutor, the Battalion Commander allegedly gave the order to assemble.

In April, Russian troops attacked the city of Sumy while an event for soldiers was taking place in the university banquet hall. According to Ukrainian information, they were ultimately unharmed in the attack, but more than 30 civilians were killed.
