He wants to give his name to a football stadium: Donald Trump is loudly booed by Washington Commanders fans

Not sure they appreciate the idea: fans of the American football team Washington Commanders harshly criticized American President Donald Trump this Sunday. Returning from a weekend at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, Donald Trump stopped in Maryland before returning to the nearby White House. In fact, it is in this small state near Washington that Northeast Stadium is located, the home ground currently occupied by the Commanders.

However, a few days ago, an article in the American press indicated that Donald Trump would appreciate it if his name was given to the team’s future stadium in the American capital. The Commanders have played at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, since 1997. Previously, the franchise played in Washington, DC, at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium (RFK Stadium), from 1961 to 1996.

But in April, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a deal to bring the Commanders back to Washington, to the site of the former RFK Stadium. Josh Harris, who leads the Commanders’ ownership group, said the team aims to open the stadium in 2030. Under what name? No one within the sports organization dared to make a statement regarding this matter. Maybe because he was afraid of scaring his own fans.

Donald Trump Stadium?

The possibility of a “Donald Trump stadium” pleases the White House. “It would definitely be a great name, because it was thanks to President Trump that the reconstruction of this new stadium was possible,” spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told CNN.

In reality, Donald Trump prefers to take the decision to carry out the project. Engaged in a war against what he called “woke ideology,” the President of the United States, seemingly obsessed with naming things, even threatened to eliminate all subsidies if the Commanders did not return to their original family name, Redskins. The team abandoned the name in 2020 after decades of criticism from Native American groups who considered it an ethnic slur and a derogatory reference to skin color.

A president who goes so far as to interfere in the functions of his favorite team: Commander fans clearly don’t like it. And they announced it with boos as Donald Trump appeared on the stadium’s giant screen. At halftime, the president read the oath that the soldiers had to take during a ceremony on the field. His barely audible speech was drowned out by mass protests. He tried to put on a good face, raising his fist and addressing the crowd, but his grin betrayed all his embarrassment, as Republicans registered setbacks in last week’s election, against the backdrop of a government shutdown, ruthless resistance to immigration and soaring inflation.
