However, how much additional contributions from individual health insurance companies actually increase must be determined on an individual basis. Health insurance companies will compete with each other and operate differently, Warken said. “Some people do this better than others and that’s why there are different additional contributions,” he added. Insureds should consider for themselves whether it is worth changing health insurance companies: “Contribution levels and benefits should always be considered.”

According to the law, the ministry actually announces the benchmark additional health insurance fund contributions for the following year no later than November 1. As in previous years, there is now a slight delay. To reduce the pressure of rising fees, Warken has just passed a savings package of two billion euros through the Bundestag.

Politicians cannot directly set stable contributions to each individual fund. Health insurance companies themselves will decide on specific additional contributions for 2026 for insured persons in the coming weeks, depending on their financial situation. The overall contribution shared between employers and workers also includes a general rate of 14.6 percent of gross wages.

If additional contributions increase, members have special rights to termination. There is only a strong wave of improvement at the beginning of 2025.
