UNESCO gives the first yes to Italian cuisine, a world heritage site. This morning the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization published its technical evaluation of the candidacy dossier of Italian cuisine: the world expert body UNESCO recommends including Italian cuisine on the List of the intangible cultural heritage of mankind.
This is the first fundamental opinion that will form the basis of the final political decision to be taken by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee which will meet in India in New Delhi from 8 to 13 December.
If the technical assessment is confirmed in December by the New Delhi Political Committee, Italian cuisine will become the first cuisine in the world to receive overall UNESCO recognition.
“The technical evaluation published today tells us that the dossier has been completed well and is consistent with UNESCO’s objectives,” said Pier Luigi Petrillo, professor at Luiss Guido Carli and curator of the candidacy dossier. “However, it must be remembered that this first answer should not create any illusions – added the legal expert – because the Intergovernmental Committee that will meet in India in December has the possibility of fully reviewing the decision”.
Among the decisions published today by the United Nations Organization are also those relating to Swiss Yodel, Cuban Son, Japanese Origami, Cypriot passito wine and the Passion of Christ in Mexico.
