“Nobody wants to butcher Giorgetti. Those who are being massacred today are the Italians, the workers employees, the younger generation, temporary workers and women. They are the ones who are being slaughtered by this crisis”. That was the response of the Secretary General of CGIL, Maurizio Landini, when asked by journalists, on the sidelines of the Assolombarda event in Milan, regarding the Minister of Economy’s statement regarding this maneuver.

Patrimonial chapter. For Landini “not wanting to do that means making a political choice, meaning you side with 500 thousand rich people over 40 million honest people who pay taxes, who work and who keep this country afloat”.
“Giorgetti said someone with 40 thousand euros is not rich? We also know that someone is not rich with 40 thousand euros”, he answered. “A person who earns 40 thousand euros, from 2023 to 2025 he pays 3,500 euros more in taxes than he should. And with the money they give him now, they give him 18 euros a month, 340 euros when he pays 3,500 more”, he underlined.
“Isn’t it clear what it means to be involved in this? And we are talking about ordinary people, we are not talking about rich people. We are talking about working people,” he continued. “Why should these people pay 3,500 euros more in taxes than they don’t have to pay and why shouldn’t you give it back to them?”, he said.

Then, regarding the CGIL strike on December 12: “The time has come to make a choice: don’t they want a strike? Well, let’s open negotiations and change the law.”
“Otherwise, what other tools do we have if they don’t listen to us, if they put their trust in us, if they grant amnesty? – asked Landini – This is the time when the people must revolt, they must take to the streets, they must mobilize, they must say enough is enough. This is the picture of the situation, this is what made us propose a strike, including the fact that we also see a situation of industrial crisis, and not only that, what will come to the fore is beyond the lies they tell”.
The CGIL Secretary General also responded to criticism of Friday’s choice and the irony of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni: “The strike was carried out, it was carried out to change the budget law that you have created. And as is known, when someone decides to go on strike, they give up their salary and therefore the day you go on strike has nothing to do with it”.
“If they want the strike not to happen, they have a very precise tool – he stressed – namely reopening real negotiations with the unions and changing the wrong budget law.”
Reply to Tajani
Regarding the statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, who stated that trade union members had political goals, Landini replied: “He is the one in the current government, I don’t have any specific goals.”
“As we have seen, other trade unionists have been in government, accusing me of having political aims, so I would like to say that for me it is the coherence that speaks: they have been telling me for about 15 years that I have political aims, I am still a member of the trade union, because I think this is my job”, underlined.
“For me it is not a political goal, for me the goal is to bring home results, because working people must be able to live with dignity. Currently that is not happening,” concluded Landini.
