Seven people were arrested
The investigation began in January 2025, after an unusual increase in fraudulent payments at several businesses in Bandalona and Sant Adrial del Besos, Spain, El Pais reported. On November 5, seven people from the same family – four women and three men – who frequently traveled were arrested.
In a press release carried by ABC Spain, the Mossos d’Esquadra stated that the fake 100 euro banknote was produced in a Neapolitan printing house controlled by the Italian Camorra. These banknotes, which were widespread in Europe, were dangerous because of the high quality of the printing.
They also very realistically imitate the security features of the old series of euro banknotes. But on the back, the nominal value printed in purple does not change to green, unlike real banknotes.

Some 467,000 counterfeit banknotes, mainly 20 and 50 euro notes, were withdrawn from circulation last year, an increase of 24% in one year.
