Municipal elections 2026: in Brittany, a couple runs for mayor of a village

Two mayors in Trévron by 2026? After all, this was the wish of the outgoing board members. Cécile Brunet-Métayer, who works as a web designer and computer graphic artist, no longer wants to carry the burden of her mandate as head of a village of less than 700 people near Dinan (Côtes-d’Armor). Therefore, he put together a list that he co-chaired with Vivien Protois, the family’s 38-year-old assistant, Ouest-France reported.

By law, there cannot be two mayors for the same municipality, therefore the pairing is conceptual. “The city council elects the mayor and his deputies from among its members, by secret ballot and absolute majority,” explains the General Code of Local Government (CGCT). Whoever takes on the role is usually at the top of the list. Therefore, Cécile Brunet-Métayer will again lead the voting list on March 15 and 22, but Vivien Protois will not serve as deputy.

Representation

The duo will make decisions together and be surrounded by a team of 15 city council members, as required by law for cities with 500 to 1,499 residents. This list, which has been required since the May 21, 2025 law, will be presented without labels. If it hasn’t been revealed yet, it should be able to unite all levels of society. “What we want, above all, is representation,” explained the mayor of Ouest-France whose term is coming to an end. These regulations also stipulate that the list will not include candidates from the same household or family.

Since 2020, the Breton commune has held no less than three municipal elections. An unlucky candidate in 2020, Cécile Métayer-Brunet took over the leadership of Trévron in 2021 after a by-election. Following a series of resignations on the city council, new elections must be held by the end of 2022.

The couple’s projects include renovating the village school attended by each of the two mayoral candidates’ children. The duo also plans to combat senior isolation by holding meetups, particularly at community libraries in the future.
