Support for the euro is at its highest level in history, except in France

A quarter century after its creation, the single currency has never been more popular. Of the twenty countries that make up the eurozone, 83% of citizens support it, while 14% oppose it, according to the Eurobarometer survey conducted every six months by the European Commission. In 2002, when the euro was physically introduced, support hovered around 65%, while 25% opposed it. This largely positive opinion, which weakened during the eurozone crisis, has continued to grow since 2016.

A blog post from the European Central Bank (ECB), published Monday 10 November, looked at these developments. This shows that almost all countries have experienced developments that benefit the euro. Particularly spectacular jumps (an increase of more than 20 points) were recorded in Spain, Portugal and Cyprus. The people of these countries, badly affected by the crisis of the 2010s, seem to have decided that membership of the single currency is ultimately a source of structural power.
