Ten years after the attacks of November 13, 2015, “Libération” gives carte blanche to 13 artists to share their opinions on the attacks and their consequences. Personal memories, political reflections, artistic creations are illustrated through drawings by visual artist Annette Messager. “There are more and more ghosts around me, Annette Messager took two thin drags from her cigarette. Maybe that’s the hope.” In fact, death is a visual artist’s old friend. At the age of 81, in his home studio in Malakoff (Hauts-de-Seine), he creates surrounded by a dressing table and mini-Catrina, who dances in tutus on the outskirts of the world. As time and art have progressed, today they intersect with montages of disemboweled stuffed animals, but the macabre dance performed by France in 2015 has marked its invention for ten years. Includes the final image of the big curtain from this slideshow. We think we see a gunman gunning down an innocent man, so dead that he already has the features of a skeleton. The witty handyman corrects him: the terrorist shot his shadow. By killing, he kills himself.
To illustrate the special edition Release“13 artists on November 13”, Annette Messager has drawn ten works from her very dense creative corpus. And he specifically created this first image that resonated with you – why? – Release and resistance. And these colors, anyone ask? Black of course, but lit up with the “red of revolution.”
