Mutti: farmers are paid 10% more to buy tomatoes than at the market

In 2025 Mutti paid its suppliers a tomato price that was 10% higher than the market average, for a total of more than 9 million euros distributed throughout the supply chain, consisting of around 800 Italian farmers. During the last tomato campaign, the Parma company transformed 728 thousand tons of tomatoes, the highest volume ever achieved in the company’s history, the result of a 10% increase in hectares of land dedicated to tomatoes in Northern Italy. The volumes recorded during the summer allowed the group to rebalance the complex situation resulting from the 2024 campaign, which ended with a shortfall of 20% in quantitative terms, leading to an almost total stock breakdown ahead of the start of the new season.

«Despite the complex climatic context – explains Massimo Perboni, director of Mutti’s agricultural services – with high nighttime temperatures at the end of June putting many hectares under stress and negatively impacting crop yields in August, the end of the campaign offset the initial difficulties». The role of Mutti’s supply chain, consisting of more than 800 farmers, is crucial to the success of the 2025 campaign: «For this reason we have allocated 9 million euros in incentives and recognized a contribution of up to 20% more for the initial and final product – explains Francesco Mutti, CEO of the family company of the same name -. Tomatoes are a crop that requires daily attention and in-depth knowledge of the land, even more so in the context of an increasingly unpredictable climate.” In addition to the price surplus, Mutti has also over the years launched an incentive program called the Golden Pomodorino Award, which is now in its 26th edition. The award includes four categories – round tomatoes, a historic recognition awarded since the first edition, datterino, lungo and cherry – as well as decisions capable of providing Mutti with the best quality throughout the season, from mid-July to the end of September”. Therefore, the 2025 edition rewards 68 farmers in the supply chain, with further economic improvements across the entire volume delivered to Mutti. The group’s most recent revenue, in 2024, closed at 703 million euros, with export volumes exceeding those of Italy.
