A van carrying three newspapers was attacked by four hooded men during a raid on Roccarainolain the province Napleswhere he traveled after loading the newspaper at the printing press Casertawhere they are printed. After several hours the vehicle was found in Casalnuovo, still in the Nolan area. But inside, there are no longer copies of “Metropolis”, “Il Roma” and “Il Sannio Quotidiano”, three newspapers specifically related to the region and also dealing with news and the Camorra. However, the raid, at least from the findings of the first investigation, was not directly related to the newspaper’s editorial office or any other link in the chain that goes from printing, distribution to newsstands: the van was to be used to carry out an ATM robbery in San Gennaro Vesuviano. The robbery failed, as the agency’s alarm made the bandits surrender.
Criticism
However, there was unanimous condemnation of what happened, starting from the Order of Journalists, the National Press Federation and the Campanian Union of Journalists. The directors of the three newspapers, during a live broadcast on Tgr Rai from Campania, expressed their astonishment at what happened. «It was – said Antonio Sasso for Roma – a Camorra style ambush. It is very serious if three newspapers are silenced simultaneously, during an election campaign. This is an information joke, we have to react. Who’s that? This is what we ask ourselves and we wait for the answer.” Raphael Schettinofor Metropolis, highlighting the role of newspapers that «tell the story and give life to a region that is trying with all its might to free itself from the Camorra that lurks everywhere. We must move forward, aware of the complexities of today’s time where freedom of information is considered an intrusion.” Mark Thisbecause Sannio Quotidiano highlights that «those who consider our region, namely the province of Benevento, as a happy island are wrong.
It would be very serious if this action was aimed at silencing journalists. This should make us reflect and move forward with even more pride because, despite many difficulties, we do our job well.” There is a disturbing precedent regarding one of the three newspapers that came to the attention of the thieves last night. Several years ago Metropolis published news about the conversion of a boss’s right hand. Unwelcome news for some: a group of people appeared at the newsstands in Castellammare di Stabia where all their posters had been removed and ‘demanded’ a copy of the newspaper.
