Underwater sessions were fatal for him. A 63-year-old woman, member of a diving club in Haute-Garonne, lost her life this Monday morning during a session in Côte Vermeille, off the coast of Port-Vendres (Pyrénées-Orientales), reports our colleagues from Ici Roussillon.
The sixty-year-old man dived to reach the location of the banana boat “Alice Robert”, a French cargo ship, which passed under the German flag during the Second World War and then sank in 1944 off the coast of Port-Vendres. For almost 13 years, this shipwreck, which is famous among scuba diving enthusiasts, has been stranded at a depth of 50 meters.
Cardiorespiratory arrest
The diver felt unwell immediately after entering the water or during the ascent, local radio indicated, stating that the true circumstances of the tragedy were still to be clarified. The warning was given around 10:40 p.m. The victim was immediately rescued and rushed back to the port of Argelès-sur-Mer.
When help arrived, the sixty-year-old man was in cardiac and respiratory arrest. Sdis and Samu’s team worked hard to revive him, before he was flown to Perpignan central hospital. He was declared dead several hours later, the gendarmerie announced to Actu.
