What happened between Putin and Lavrov? Foreign media no longer report much. However, the Kremlin denied that there was a rift between the two figures.

The Kremlin has denied reports of a rift between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. “All these reports are completely false,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday. Lavrov continues to carry out his duties “actively” and will continue to attend public meetings.

Lavrov last appeared in public at the end of October. Some foreign media speculated that the minister had failed. The background is that he cannot agree with his US counterpart, Marco Rubio, regarding the manner of the meeting between Putin and US President Donald Trump in Budapest. The summit has been temporarily cancelled. At the end of October, America imposed sanctions on Russia’s largest oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil.

Lavrov has been in office for 21 years, making him the longest-serving member of Putin’s cabinet. In recent days, the Russian Foreign Ministry has only published written statements or video interviews with its chief diplomat. Her spokeswoman Maria Zakharova did not provide any information about the upcoming ministerial appointments at her weekly press conference on Friday. According to current plans, the 75-year-old will not represent Russia at the upcoming G20 summit in South Africa.
