An arctic air mass combined with a polar trough causes cold, rain and waves in various regions of Mexico

During this night and early Tuesday morning, Mexico will face a sharp drop in temperatures due to the advance of cold front number 13 and an Arctic air mass covering much of the national territory. The National Weather Service (SMN) reported that the system, in combination with a polar trough and the subtropical jet stream, also caused torrential rain and strong winds in various regions of the country.

A polar trough is an intrusion of Arctic air that destabilizes the regional climate. On weather maps they are visible as a ‘V’ and cause sudden drops in temperatures and heavy rains, like those forecast for the next few days in some states.

The authorities recommend covering yourself with at least three layers of clothing, preferably cotton or wool, hydrating your skin, avoiding sudden changes in temperature, drinking plenty of water and maintaining adequate ventilation if you use stoves or fireplaces.

Cold and frost in the north and center of the country

The Arctic air mass maintains freezing temperatures across much of Mexico. There is also the possibility of snow or sleet falling on the peaks of Pico de Orizaba, Cofre del Perote, Popocatépetl volcano, Iztaccíhuatl and Nevado de Toluca. The SMN expects low temperature conditions to persist until at least mid-week, with minimum temperatures as low as -5°C in the mountainous areas of the center and north of the country.

The SMN specifies that for the first hours of Tuesday 11 November, low temperatures are expected in much of the country, which could drop to -15 degrees Celsius in the mountainous areas of Durango and up to -10 in the mountains of Chihuahua. Values between -5 and 0 °C with frosts are also expected in the high regions of Baja California, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Zacatecas, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Puebla and Veracruz, while in the mountainous areas of Sonora, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Querétaro, State of Mexico, Mexico City and Oaxaca, temperatures from 0 to 5°C.

Cold front number 13 is expected in the early hours of Tuesday enters the Caribbean Sea and ceases to affect the national territory.
