55 passengers on a German cruise ship experienced shocks during their excursion. A trip on a catamaran in the Caribbean ends with a rescue operation.
An accident occurred during a tourist trip on a catamaran in the Dominican Republic. The 40-foot-long sailboat “Boca de Yuma I” leaked in Samaná Bay and sank. Several local media reported the incident.
Therefore, these tourists were passengers of the German cruise ship “Mein Schiff 1” which was on its way to Central America.
Images from the incident show tourists floating in the sea wearing life jackets and eventually being pulled out of the water by rescue teams. The catamaran sank completely.
A spokesperson for TUI Cruises confirmed to the newspaper “Bild” that the external provider’s sightseeing catamaran sank during a shore excursion program. He did not provide any information about the nationalities of the more than 50 people affected.
The Company liaises closely with the service provider and responsible authorities so that the incident can be examined. “The safety and well-being of our guests is our top priority. If individual support is required, of course this will be guaranteed,” the spokesman was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
According to reports, the accident ended lightly. All passengers were successfully removed from the water during a Navy rescue operation. No injuries. “Mein Schiff 1” is now on the way, reports “Bild”. The next destination is Jamaica.
The cruise ship has a capacity of 2,894 passengers. These aircraft will head to the Caribbean islands and destinations in Mexico, Panama, Honduras and Costa Rica until early April 2026.
