Trump accepts al-Sharaa and eases sanctions on Syria

Yesterday’s historic meeting at the White House between American President Donald Trump and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, the former leader of the Syrian branch of al Qaeda, jailed and with a reward of 10 million dollars, included along with his group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham on the terrorist list. At the end of the meeting, Trump announced a 180-day suspension of sanctions regulated by the “Caesar Act,” a law he himself signed during his first mandate to target the Damascus government. The goal, he explained, is “to enable this country to rebuild and prosper.” The decision follows the lifting of private sanctions against Al Sharaa and other easing measures taken against Syria in recent months.
