San Martino summer, weather and temperature: what the weather is like

The weather is good with sunshine (but not always and not everywhere) and temperatures above average for San Martino Summer, the autumn period in which, after the first cold snap, sunny weather conditions with unseasonable warmth occur. In the Southern Hemisphere this phenomenon is observed at the beginning of May, in our (boreal) hemisphere this cool period often occurs around November 11, explains the meteorologist iLMeteo.it.

Lorenzo Tedici, meteorologist at iLMeteo.it, confirmed that Italy will experience stable, cool, but not always sunny weather during the week.

Legend has it that Martin of Tours donated half his cloak to a cold beggar: after this generous act, the weather suddenly became as hot as in summer.

And this year too, as in 2024 and 2023, this phase will dominate Italy, thanks to the expansion of the African anticyclone, at least until Saturday: if we are in July, temperatures will reach 40°C.

However, this high pressure in Africa is not synonymous with blue skies everywhere: due to thermal inversion (colder on the plains than in the mountains), moisture will remain trapped in the lower layers which will produce fog, mist or low clouds and even some episodes of drizzle.

Therefore, from now until Saturday we will find low clouds in Liguria, Tuscany and in the Po Valley; elsewhere the sun will dominate, especially during the midday hours.

The most beautiful weather, also characterized by unusually hot weather, is expected in the mountains where, between Thursday and Friday, temperatures will reach 10°C above the climatological average. The incredible heat will push the freezing point in the Alps to 3,800 meters.

The normal freezing level in this period fluctuates around 1500-2000 meters, therefore we are at twice the normal level. Global Warming continues.

Unseasonable heat in the mountains, fog and low clouds on the plains in the North-Central, it will be the San Martino Summer of 2025: to set the Atlantic disturbance we will have to wait until next weekend, the rain will fall on Sunday. However, the cold will still disappear.

Next weekend’s rain will be a panacea to clean the air of the Po Valley, which is already clearly polluted: for several days now, PM10 and PM2.5 levels have exceeded the permissible limits and this dust makes our eyes red and it becomes more difficult to breathe.
