Who is Saint Martin?
Saint Martin was actually called Martin of Tours and was born around 316 in what was then the Roman Empire. As a soldier, the 17 year old teenager was riding his horse on a cold winter day. A naked beggar approached him and asked for help. Martin of Tours took his sword and divided his cloak. He gave half to the beggar and put the other half on his shoulder.
The next night he had a dream: Jesus Christ appeared to him, wearing half the robe he had given the beggar. Martin of Tours left the military and became a priest.
Why is Saint Martin’s Day celebrated?
November 11 is the funeral day of St. Martin. For his good deeds he was awarded this Christian Holiday still respected today. He should be a role model for more humanity and charity.
St. Patrick’s Parade The largest Martins with up to 8,000 participants take place in Worms, Kempen, Essen and Bocholt, among others. For organizational reasons, this event was also held on another day around November 11th.

Apart from the Christian holiday of Saint Martin, this festival starts on November 11th. at 11:11 that morning Carnival season. In many areas, carnival is celebrated over several weeks. The highlight is the carnival parade in February.
