The dismembered remains of the couple were found in the desert near Hatta, on the border with Oman, after them disappearance occurred during an alleged meeting with potential investors. United Arab Emirates and Russian authorities are conducting a joint investigation and hypothesize that the murder was linked to financial motivations.
The Rise and Fall of Roman Novak
Roman Novak39, is known in international crypto circles for its Fintopio platform, which promises to simplify cross-border digital currency transfers.
Presenting himself as a visionary entrepreneur, he has raised funds from investors in Russia, China and the Middle East, attracting attention thanks to his luxurious lifestyle and proximity to leading figures in the technology sector.
However, his name is already associated with judicial events: in 2020 he was convicted in St. Petersburg. Petersburg for financial fraud and had served part of his sentence before moving to Dubai. According to investigative sources, the new business will generate hundreds of millions of dollars in capital, but in recent months accusations of possible fraud against international investors have been circulating.
Alleged encounters and disappearances
On October 2, 2025, Novak and his wife left for Hatta to meet a group of investors interested in their project. The couple’s driver drove them to a parking lot near an artificial lake; from then on, the two would change vehicles and disappear.
An investigation later revealed that the meeting invitation was actually just a decoy. The pair were allegedly taken to a rented villa, where they were detained with the aim of gaining access to a crypto wallet allegedly linked to funds stolen from investors. When the funds failed to materialize, the kidnappers reportedly decided to kill them.
Discovery and capture
The couple’s bodies were found on October 3 in a desert area in the Fujairah region. Furthermore, security forces identified traces of blood and weapons in the villa where the alleged kidnapping occurred.
To date, seven suspects have been arrested, including a former Russian investigator and two veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. According to investigators, some of those arrested may have personally invested in Novak’s business, thereby losing large sums of money. Others would be involved in logistics, unaware of the killing intent.
The motive is between revenge and money
Investigators believe the killing may be related to efforts to recover money invested in Fintopio. Several suspects accused Novak of handling funds in an unclear manner.
Details emerging in the reconstruction add further drama to the story: shortly before his death, Novak allegedly sent a message to an acquaintance stating that he was “stuck in the mountains” and that he was in desperate need of money, despite his reputation as a millionaire in the crypto world.
The investigation continues
The deaths of Roman and Anna Novak left behind two young children, who are currently in the care of family members. Authorities continue to examine financial flows related to Novak’s platform, in an effort to clarify the nature of the investments and verify further responsibility.
The case linking financial speculation, hatred between investors and the dynamics of the crypto world, remains open and continues to develop.
