Geneva, November 11 (askanews) – Christie’s auction house will sell “Mellon Blue” tomorrow in Geneva, a bright blue diamond weighing 9.51 carats, worth between 20 and 30 million dollars. The stone, set in a ring, is considered to be one of the purest and rarest colored diamonds ever to appear on the market.
Max Fawcett, director of the jewelry department at Christie’s: “To find a nearly ten carat stone of this extraordinary shape, such impressive size and deep blue color is something very rare, and we are very excited.”
The diamond once belonged to Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, a famous philanthropist and designer of the White House garden in the 1960s. “It was probably purchased in the 1960s or 1970s. It was the most important diamond in his collection.”
First sold in 2014 for $32.6 million, “Mellon Blue” is now back on the market, at a time when superior quality bluestones are increasingly rare.
