Vienna, November 11 (Adnkronos) – “In this long journey” represented by the eighty-year history of the United Nations, “there have been obstacles, mistakes and gaps, caused partly by the structural weaknesses of the Organization; partly caused by fluctuations in the political will of the Member States themselves to fully support its actions. The recent reforms launched by Secretary-General Guterres were initiated in response to the demand for greater effectiveness. This is a step in the right direction, but requires broader reflection on the mechanisms of decision-making bodies in the same way. The UN, starting with the Security Council, whose composition – and the powers vested in permanent members – mirrors the peace of 1945.” This was expressed by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, speaking in Vienna, together with the President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, at the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the UN Convention against transnational organized crime.
“The UN – recalled the Head of State – can fulfill its mandate as a guarantor of international peace only if its member states allow it. I am thinking, for example, of the need to strengthen – and not destroy – the framework relating to disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, in a phase of history where, on the contrary, we are witnessing unacceptable allusions to the use of weapons of mass destruction”.
“There is no other alternative – emphasized Mattarella – to multilateralism, unless we decide to take the path of permanent conflict, by returning to a primitive vision of relations between peoples, the results of which are already known historically and dramatically.”
