Mattarella, ‘The current Palermo Convention challenges us greatly’ – Il Tempo

Vienna, 11 November (Adnkronos) – “The Palermo Convention, with its additional Protocols, was born precisely from the realization that the phenomenon of transnational crime, like all other global challenges, can only be overcome by great force. From this comes its continued relevance, 25 years after its signing. It is the current problems that really challenge us, in the face of which the results are able to be promoted concretely with reference to the moral tension, the sense of responsibility, the determination brought back by Giovanni Falcone for the sake of the dignity of the person.” This was expressed by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, speaking in Vienna, together with the President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, at the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the UN Convention against transnational organized crime, adopted in Palermo in December 2000 and ratified today by 190 countries.

“A Convention – recalled the Head of State – that also saw the strong will of an Italy that had weathered moments of arrogant aggression on the part of organized crime. Among other things, the bloody attacks of 1992 that claimed the lives of Giovanni Falcone, Francesca Morvillo and Paolo Borsellino and, together with them, their brave and brave bodyguard agents, remain etched in the collective memory”.

“Falcone and Borsellino – with whom I knew and often associated – had dealt a very effective and successful blow to the mafia, exposing its financial channels, connections and social weaknesses. It was the beginning of a season marked by new investigative techniques: the methods of confiscating and using the enormous resources of organized crime for social purposes were exemplary. The attacks – concluded Mattarella – were the final act of the arrogant mafia, which believed itself capable of challenging the State and, on the contrary, was defeated “.
