Design planning for the Dresden television tower has been completed. When can visitors go to the landmark again.
Deutsche Funkturm GmbH has completed design planning for the revival of the Dresden television tower. This landmark building, which has been closed to visitors since 1991, will once again offer views of the city from above.
The project is now entering its next stage. Appropriate funding applications will be submitted by the end of the year. The total costs amounted to 25.6 million euros. The federal government covers half, while the state of Saxony and the city of Dresden cover the rest equally.
Saxony Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) and Dresden Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) have visited the building’s 252-meter-high platform. Kretschmer said: “Many people in Dresden associate the television tower with memories of childhood, family and home.” Design planning secures funding.
Mayor Hilbert explained that the realization of the long-standing wish of many Dresden residents is getting closer. Hilbert thinks 2030 is a realistic year for reopening.
The Dresden TV Tower opened on 7 October 1969. Architects Kurt Nowotny, Herrmann Rühle and Johannes Braune were inspired by champagne glasses when devising the design. There is a restaurant at an altitude of 145 meters and a viewing platform above it. About 200,000 people visit the tower every year.
Television towers currently only serve technical purposes for broadcasting and mobile communications. All permits for public operations have expired. The visitor operational approval phase is planned to begin next year.
Operator has been found. He plans to turn the tower into a world of adventure using digital technology. The panels will be equipped with ultra-thin LED films that combine the virtual and real worlds – so visitors can watch the sunrise even in cloudy weather.
