North Korea is celebrating
The carnival session opens on the Marne
The Jecken family in Schleswig-Holstein kicked off their fifth season with music and dancing – but that was just the beginning. Pageants, children’s carnivals and large parades will soon be held.
Schleswig-Holstein opened the carnival session with a ceremonial storming of the Marne town hall. The mayor of the municipality of the Dithmarschen district welcomed the princely couple Anja III and Björn I and about 30 of their Jecken. They previously marched with musical accompaniment from the market square to the city hall.
Instead of starting at 11:11 as usual elsewhere, the carnival season on the Marne doesn’t start until the afternoon. The reason: Children should be able to take part after school, explained Dennis Tank, President of the “Marner Carnival Society”, to the German Press Agency. Music and dancing followed at the town hall.
The Marne, with a population of about 5,900, is considered the carnival center of the northernmost state. Here, the Northern Lights, considered carnival lovers, have also been celebrating Rose Monday for half a century. Since February 1956, with the exception of between 1969 and 1978, the float has passed through the small town on this day. Fools day “achtern Diek” is considered the highlight of the street carnival in Schleswig-Holstein.
What happens next until Rose Monday?
However there will still be several events taking place before the move in mid-February 2026. As President Tank explained, there will be two away events in Büsum and Westerdeichstrich before the meeting carnival starts at the end of January.
Two large procession sessions and a children’s procession session are planned in the Dithmarscher community. A children’s carnival will take place at Ochsenmarkt in February. Eventually, tens of thousands of spectators are expected to return to the Marne for the Rose Monday parade.
