World Climate Conference: California Governor: “Trump is only temporary”

At the World Climate Conference, California Governor Gavin Newsom urged people around the world not to turn their backs on the US President Donald Trump to be intimidated. “Trump is only temporary. And I hope people around the world remember this,” said the democratic politician in Belém, Brazil. Trump is cruel, chaotic, and moody. “But people have to defend themselves. You have to defend yourself against tyrants. That’s how you deal with oppressors.”

Under Trump’s leadership, the US withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement and no longer takes part in climate conferences. Newsom called on countries around the world not to let pressure from the Trump administration deter them from making climate protection efforts. Also California wants to stick to climate goals – like other states and cities in the US.

Not all US states are following Trump’s path

California is part of what’s called the Under2Coalition, which is a platform for states and territories to come together – not just states United States of Americabut also internationally, for example from Germany Baden-Württemberg is one of them. Members are committed to ambitious climate goals; in the case of US states, they oppose the Trump administration’s withdrawal from climate policy.

Newwho has been a vocal opponent of Trump for months, is considered the Democratic nominee for the next presidential election. As governor, he has governed the most populous and economically powerful state in the US since 2019.
