The VfL Wolfsburg footballers suffered their first defeat of the new Champions League season against their feared opponent, Olympique Lyon. Coach Stephan Lerch’s side largely had no chances in the 1:3 (0:2) defeat in France and therefore still have six points after three matchdays. It was Lyon’s third win in their third match.

For Wolfsburg, this was the seventh defeat in a row against their long-term rivals. Just last season, Lyon won both group games; before that, there had been three recent defeats against the record French champions in the Champions League.
