Magnificent, strong and hard like his Carrara marble, Lorenzo Musetti he looked cursed with exhaustion but with his talent and remaining energy he won an epic match in the second match of the ATP Finals against Alex De Minaur with a score of dI’m 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in nearly three hours of gameplay. After a great first set, in the second the legs started to stop turning and in the third the Australian seemed to be starting to recover but it wasn’t over yet: at 5-4 came the deciding break that turned everything around and won the match, with head and heart, 7-5. Musetti will play the deciding match on Thursday against Carlos Alcaraz where it will be determined whether he will reach the semifinals.
Lorenzo’s words
“Without you I wouldn’t be able to win. The feeling of fatigue in the middle of the match was very pronounced, my legs didn’t work, I struggled but I managed to dig out the little energy left in me. The last two months have been very busy, I am very happy”, Musetti expressed his joy in front of the crowd at the Inalpi Arena in Turin. “First of all, I am proud to have achieved this goal also for my team, my family and friends who support me every day. It’s a constant job made up of ups and downs, it’s not easy to always perform at the top. This year we made a big leap in quality, in previous years I would have never taken home a game like this.” he concluded.
First set to Lorenzo
That first set it started with good balance, both protagonists holding points on their respective rounds of service: balance reigned, one point each with excellent serves but Musetti played great tennis with volleys that received applause. De Minaur was a tough and solid opponent but then the turning point came at 5-5 in the eleventh game: two break points for Lorenzo were cancelled, two more break points came and the fourth try was spot on, 6-5 and a roar from the Inalpi Arena. He made no mistake on his shift by closing out 7-5, we rejoice together with the Italian public.
De Minaur won the second set
Also second set he had an even start even if Musetti ate his hand for wasting three break points in the second game. There was a lot of exchange but the game was practically point to point: 1-1, 2-2, 3-3. We played quite a lot, there was no shortage of shots but serve proved to be the difference for Carrarino and the Australian for the moment. De Minaur appeared very solid in the seventh game where he left no points for Musetti, 4-3. The turning point in the eighth game, 15-40 and Alex’s first two break points and a forehand down the line made it 5-3. De Minaur now served to win the set, Musetti in his waning phase giving too much initiative to his opponent. Two set points, the first was wasted, not the second, 6-3 and everything will be decided in the third set.
Amazing Musetti: a great win in the third set
That thirdhowever, it started in the worst possible way with Musetti looking tired and standing, 0-40 and three break points for De Minaur who immediately attacked, 1-0, who escaped and consolidated the lead with a very well played second game, 2-0. With no small amount of effort, Musetti changed the score with his own serve and shortened the score, to 2-1. The match was suspended for 10 minutes due to illness in the stands, at break point the restart for Carrarino recovered and De Minaur went 3-1 up. Uphill, Lorenzo seemed to have nothing left: from 30-0 to 30-40 with another break point for De Minaur but he was good at serving and volleying for a break and then he was very good at taking the point, 3-2. The Australian was up 4-2 and had the ball for a double break but Musetti, with his remaining strength, canceled and won the match, 4-3. The sci-fi exchange is won by Alex, the audience appreciates 31 shots in a row and applauds, the score is now 5-3. With the fifth ace Musetti held serve (5-4). Musetti was steadfast, a perfect shot gave him a break point worth 5-5, he got it, reopened the race and rejoiced with the public. Spectacular.
