“A hawk just released a cat on my windshield”: the misadventures of an American motorist on the highway

Of course this is surprising. A car driver had to call for help in North Carolina (United States) this Wednesday, November 19 at around 08.15 after his windshield was hit and broken by a cat dropped from a height of several meters by… an eagle.

Even though he was not injured, the driver was still somewhat shaken by the incident, the Associated Press office reported Saturday this week. While he was on Route 74, near Bryson City and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, he called 911, America’s emergency number: “You may not believe it, but a hawk just dropped a cat through the windshield of my car. It blew it to pieces,” he can be heard telling the dispatcher in a recording of the call.

The “craziest thing” ever seen, the witness said

A witness also witnessed the incident and told the driver it was the “craziest thing” he had ever seen. Emergency service operators quickly reassured the driver and guided him to the nearest relief patrol, so he could be picked up.

The cat’s corpse landed heavily on the passenger seat of the car, before bouncing and ending up on the side of the road. It is impossible to know whether the animal was accidentally released by the eagle, or whether the bird had finished eating it. According to Kendrick Weeks, manager of the Western Wildlife Diversity Program at the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the cat likely died on the road before being spotted by the eagle.
