What an accident!
After a top start with seven points from the first three games, things went downhill quickly. Eight defeats in a row, a drop to 16th – and St. Louis’ weakest interim result yet. Pauli in Bundesliga history.
Compared to the first year in the 2024/25 Bundesliga, there were more missed opportunities up front and things suddenly got better at the back.
Last season, St. Pauli is still a defensive bastion: with just 41 goals conceded, the promoted side have the second best defense in the league behind Bayern. This stability has been lost. After eleven match days, we had conceded 21 goals – the same number throughout the first half of the season. Only in the derby against HSV (2-0) was there a zero.
Very worrying: Teams are allowing an average of four more shots on goal per game than at the start of the season (source: Sportec Solutions). And: St. Pauli has provided 23 big chances – more than any other team.

The slump can also be measured offensively. This season, St Pauli have scored just nine goals after eleven games – the same number as city rivals HSV, only bottom side Heidenheim have scored less often (eight). Meanwhile last season there were only seven goals, but the efficiency was better.
This season, St. Pauli had more shots, crosses and counter-attacks – almost nothing worth counting.
Attacking: Eight of the nine goals have come from the right wing, none have penetrated the midfield so far.
Arkadiusz Pyrka (23) had the most offensive action, supported by Manolis Saliakas (29) and Adam Dźwigała (30) who are already in the promotion season.
The momentum of the past has been lost on the left: Phillip Treu (24/Freiburg) and Elias Saad (25/Augsburg), who improved the game on the left last season, are no longer there. Louis Oppie has not been able to close this gap. He did a good job in defense, but remained weak in attack: 55 crosses from the left, no shots.
Nearly half of the goals (four out of nine) came from set pieces, with only five coming from play. Low league!
This means that the attack was already weak in the previous season. Without the once stable defenses, things have now become very brutal.
