It crossed 58,000 km over 28 years, from South America to the Caspian Sea. After all this travelling, almost like a tour around the world, former paratrooper Karl Bushby wanted to return home to Hull in England. However, to get there, he asked to go through the Channel Tunnel on foot, British media BBC reported.
If he is denied access, the 56-year-old Briton has announced that he will swim across the Channel, as he has done in the Caspian Sea. Because, according to the rules he himself set, Karl Bushy cannot use any means of motorized transportation on his adventures, including ferries.
“If I had to swim across, of course I would. But the water would be colder than the Caspian Sea,” so “it would be very painful if the answer was no,” Karl Bushby told BCC. The former paratrooper is currently in Budapest, Hungary, after leaving Chile in 1998.
“This will be difficult”
Obtaining authorization to use the service tunnel to cross the Strait proved difficult. His support team told the BBC they had tried several times to contact those responsible for the tunnel, but had so far received no response.

He admits that the thought of approaching the end of his 58,000km adventure is “absolutely terrifying”. “It will be difficult,” said Karl Bushby. “I spoke to several long-term walkers, some of whom had been walking for five years or more, and they told me that it was very difficult to return to normal life. »
“The key is to start another mission, to have another goal,” he added, before launching BCC: “I can imagine myself in a classroom, announcing the good news to children: 99.99% of the world is good. The world is not as scary as you imagine. »
“Even in places you least expect, I have met kind and generous people. In Peru, I was welcomed into houses made of cardboard to share a bowl of rice,” continues Karl Bushby.
