An homage to “Despite Us”. Accompanied by his Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, Emmanuel Macron arrived at Les Invalides at around 10.00. The Head of State began by paying tribute to “Even though we”, these soldiers of Alsatia and the Moselle, were forcibly incorporated into Germany. Real rehabilitation for these Frenchmen, who were often considered traitors upon their return to France, was enlisted in 1942, thanks to the German military service that became mandatory for residents of Alsace and the Moselle. Although many tried to escape, most had to decide to serve in the Wehrmacht or Luftwaffe. About 40,000 of them died and 90,000 returned. A plaque in their honor will be installed at Les Invalides.
Several wreaths were placed on the grave of the Unknown Soldier. The Head of State will end the ceremony at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe. Before him, several community leaders had visited the monument. Among them are Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, National Assembly President Yaël Braun-Pivet, and Senate President Gérard Larcher.
